Koichi Terai studied art at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and originally had an interest in European classical works.
He used to produce traditional oil paintings but later moved on to create his own distinctive style of abstract expression. According to Terai himself, this development was the result of his pursuit of expression based on innate human feelings and sensibilities.
All of which may also be described as a quiet yet frank attempt to appeal to his viewers on an emotional level by distilling into a purer form the fresh surprise, impression or contemplation that he had experienced in viewing his subjects and then capturing them in his works.
He is consistent in his choice of themes, often adopting natural phenomena such as the earth and trees, water and snow, or wing and sound, although he employs a variety of different methods of expression.
To mention just a couple, in “Waterfall” he uses a collage of multiple layers of fabric to produce an effective representation of the surfaces of rocks and the appearance of cascading water.
And in “Water Spirit‘Gush’” he creates a world of tension woven with snow, ice and limpid spring water while exploring the potential of expression made possible by the use of a Japanese paper that possess a unique feel.
Terai, who turns instinctively away from force of habit, is an artist who has no alterative but to continue his own original pursuits based on his robust technique. For this reason he is certain to offer the viewing public a steady stream of bold new visions in the years ahead.
